Welcome to all Topeka Quarter Midget Association
Novice Drivers and their families.
All Novice participants must complete and submit the 2011 Membership Applications prior to the Second (On –Track) Novice Session. Please bring your Novice Package, including Novice Training Checklist to each session. Attendance will be taken at each session. We would strongly suggest that every Novice attend all four sessions. We require that the Novices attend three sessions, including the classroom session minimum, and may either schedule a makeup session or document their understanding of the session missed with the Novice Director. If you do not attend the minimum three sessions, you will not graduate and will not be able to race until completed.
Please work with your drivers to find his/her weaknesses and or fears. In addition please keep in mind THESE ARE CHILDREN. The time we choose and the way we conduct training is important. We will attempt to make the training a “fun time”, while stressing the importance of following directions, concentration, teamwork and sportsmanship.
As we get started with your racing experience in the next few weeks please remember that every one of us in this sport started exactly where you are right now, at the beginning. Some families that start have a background in racing, and for others it is their very first experience. For this reason we will assign a “Mentor Family” to all new Novice families at your first session. Our QMA Clubs exist for all these families and you will soon see that your TKQMA Club is about helping each other every step of the way.
Getting started you will have lots of questions but you will also have lots of time to get them answered. Session after session we will add more that you need to know but feel free to ask question any questions you have as we go along or ask your “mentor’ for help. The only bad questions will be those that don’t get asked!
Parents/handlers please work with your drivers on lineups. Lineups and following certain track rules are a very important part of the Novice Training Program. The drivers need to learn their lineup positions, flags and signals before racing can begin. Please work with your driver to practice these areas thru the training materials provided and any other means you find to be effective. We have found that practice with matchbox cars works very well for practicing lineups with our young drivers.
It is very important that your car is ready for the first session. We will be performing safety inspections, checking safety equipment and helping ensure that you are familiar with properly securing the arm restraints, seat belts and neck collars or restraint systems. All items that are not acceptable at the first session will be identified and will need to be corrected before the second session or first track session. If you have any questions about preparing your car prior to the first session, please contact one of the members listed below.
Please note: Radio receivers (racecievers) are required by TQMA for all Novice and Junior classes. Racecievers are supplied by the track. (or may be purchased) Members will receive one free headset and any addl. may be purchased from TKQMA for $6.00. In addition a working transponder is required for all cars. Transponders may be rented for $10.00 per race day. (or may be purchased) Transponder brackets may also be purchased for $5.00 from the Tech Director. We will utilize the raceceivers for our on-track Novice Sessions to get our Novice drivers used to listening and following directions from the Race Director on race days, however transponders will not be utilized until race days. At the Novice Directors discretion we may also utilize remote shutoff switches, provided by the club, on all novice cars.
Again, welcome to the incredible sport of quarter midget racing. Your family is now a part of the “best kept secret” in all of youth sports. As a part of over 4000 QMA drivers and families across this country and Canada your child will now have the opportunity to experience things no other sport can offer!
Best Regards,
